Narcissistic personality disorder

Is true that sometimes I feel I should empathize more with some people but is also true that we should limit and the sooner the better. Is said that fashion industry is plenty of narcissistic but I am not that sure, there are some but is true I have met some people with that personality behavior out of the industry, and here is my humble endeavor to make them understand  there is always a reason of our acts.

Pathological narcissism occurs in a spectrum of severity. In its more extreme forms, it is narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). NPD is considered to result from a person's belief that they are flawed in a way that makes them fundamentally unacceptable to others.[18] This belief is held below the person's conscious awareness; such a person would typically deny thinking such a thing, if questioned. In order to protect themselves against the intolerably painful rejection and isolation that (they imagine) would follow if others recognized their supposedly defective nature, such people make strong attempts to control others’ view of them and behavior towards them.

Pathological narcissism can develop from an impairment in the quality of the person's relationship with their primary caregivers, usually their parents, in that the parents were unable to form a healthy, empathicattachment to them.[citation needed] This results in the child conceiving of themselves as unimportant and unconnected to others. The child typically comes to believe they have some personality defect that makes them unvalued and unwanted.[14]

Narcissistic personality disorder is isolating, disenfranchising, painful, and formidable for those living with it and often those who are in a relationship with them. Distinctions need to be made among those who have NPD because not each and every person with NPD is the same. Even with similar core issues, the way in which one's individual narcissism manifests itself in his or her relationships varies.[citation needed]

To the extent that people are pathologically narcissistic, they can be controlling, blaming, self-absorbed, intolerant of others’ views, unaware of others' needs and of the effects of their behavior on others, and insistent that others see them as they wish to be seen.[11]

People who are overly narcissistic commonly feel rejected, humiliated and threatened when criticised. To protect themselves from these dangers, they often react with disdain, rage, and/or defiance to any slight criticism, real or imagined.[19] To avoid such situations, some narcissistic people withdraw socially and may feign modesty or humility. In the case of feeling the lack of admiration, adulation, attention and affirmation the person can also manifest wishes to be feared and to be notorious (narcissistic supply).

Though individuals with NPD are often ambitious and capable, the inability to tolerate setbacks, disagreements or criticism, along with lack of empathy, make it difficult for such individuals to work cooperatively with others or to maintain long-term professional achievements.[20] With narcissistic personality disorder, the person's perceived fantastic grandiosity, often coupled with a hypomanic mood, is typically not commensurate with his or her real accomplishments.

The exploitative, sense of entitlement, lack of empathy, disregard for others, and constant need for attention inherent in NPD adversely affect interpersonal relationships.

[edit]Theories on narcissistic personality disorder and shame

It has been suggested that narcissistic personality disorder may be related to defenses against shame.[21]

Glen Gabbard suggested NPD could be broken down into two subtypes.[22] He saw the "oblivious" subtype as being grandiose, arrogant and thick-skinned and the "hypervigilant" subtype as easily hurt, oversensitive and ashamed.

He suggested that the oblivious subtype presents a large, powerful, grandiose self to be admired, envied and appreciated. This self is the antithesis of the weakened and internalized self that hides in a generic state of shame. This is how the internalized self fends off devaluation, while the hypervigilant subtype neutralizes devaluation by seeing others as unjust abusers. This hypervigilant type does not fend off devaluation; he is obsessed with it.

Jeffrey Young, who coined the term "Schema Therapy", a technique originally developed by Aaron T. Beck (1979), also links shame to NPD. He sees the so-called Defectiveness Schema as a core schema of NPD, next to the Emotional Deprivation and Entitlement Schemas.[23] All Schemas may incorporate maladaptive coping styles, for example, the defectiveness schema may include:

  • Surrender: Chooses critical partners and significant others; puts him- or herself down.
  • Avoidance: Avoids sharing "shameful" thoughts and feelings with partners and significant others due to fear of rejection.
  • Overcompensation: Behaves in a critical or superior way toward others; tries to come across as perfect.

A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:
  1. has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)
  2. is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
  3. believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)
  4. requires excessive admiration
  5. has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations
  6. is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends
  7. lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others
  8. is often envious of others or believes others are envious of him or her
  9. shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes

A 12 years old girl is asking to divorce her 80 years old husband in Saudi Arabia.

The girl was married to her father's cousin last year against her wishes and those of her mother. Apparently the marriage was sealed with a dowry of 20.000 €

The Human Right Commission has hired a lawyer to represent the girl when she takes her case to the court near the conservative Riyadh.

This is the first time that the Human Rights Commission has intervened publicly in such a case.

Saudi Arabia has no minimun legal age for marriage. a draft law prohibiting child marriage is under discussion. The draft law is expected to establish a minimun age for marriage of between 16 and 18.

Finances

FINANCES

The European Union has just established  a new president in Brussels, Mr. Jean-Claude Trichet ( 67 )is the president of the European Central Bank and the Central Bank responsability is to keep the inflation controlled. Moreover the Bank, based here ( where I live ) has almost no formal tool to help an ailing member country like Greece.

The alarm of Greece, Spain and Portugal in red figures make think that if the crisis worsens, it would fall to EU members to arrange a rescue of Greece or any other EU's country like Portugal .

Taxpayers are having a great concern , become aware of how much a rescue may cost to them.

Trends

This morning I received a sample from  Salvatore Ferragamo, an orange double breasted jacket and last week  same from another Italian brand that I like very much, Cruciani ,well known by the way of working the cashmere but that now is working in a whole life style as I could see at this last Pitti Uomo. I also include  a brand I find classic yet fresh, Band of outsiders.

Cinema

cinema

Jean-Luc Goddard " Band of outsiders " 1964 , a classic to be seen, for young crowd , three lead roles. Playful, entertaining. The dancing scene is the most remarkable of the whole movie.

James Cameron " AVATAR " a 265 mm budget for this movie. Technological extraordinary effects is this formula. Visual , entertaining, that's it.

I personally would like to see Sigourney Weaver  also in different types of roles.

Books

books

Ernst Gombrich " the story of art " by Phaidon. first published in 1950 , currently in its 16th edition. Still a reference as one of the most accessible introduction to the Arts.

Judith Collins " sculpture today" by phaidon. overview of contemporary sclulture.

Actuality

actuality

they say this era will be classified and recalled as the informatic era, perhaps is true since we are in front of the screen , typing and clicking the mouse everyday.

If is not for working then the reason is spending our time googling or facebooking. I should recognize at the very begin of my FB account I was curious of  the possibilities of networking and getting connected with a lot of people, people that I even didn't know but I wanted to meet , but farmvilles requests , smiles, pokes, e-cards, the coolest and the most sexy person contests and invitations to parties in remote places with people I really haven't met in person made me think I should stop and limit the time I was spending to reply and block applications.

However I think we shouldn't ignore this huge phenomenon had changed our habits of communicating but also had helped  us to  sharing and feed with anxiety the ego for some others.

The American ,Mark Zuckerberg, born the '84 is the co-founder of this informatic hit that he created while he was attending Harvard.

As of January '10 he is the youngest self made tycoon, congratulations...

Editorial

Stuck in a path that is half way to people restlessness  and the ideal world of an artist , I decided to take actions to skip this dull period; sharing opinions, letters, images, motions and sounds and discovering personages, exploring sites, venues and visionary  the world and society .

Hopefully  this intention have echo in all those who may relate this vision and way of thinking-to those ones I consider as my fellows - and to all those  it would be interesting to meet and sharing with.

I will dedicate this first blog issue to the Art.

What is Art to me? is having freedom to dream in  an ideal world and generosity in the giving at the creative process whatever is the result.

I hope you enjoy this material and contribute with your opinions.
