A 12 years old girl is asking to divorce her 80 years old husband in Saudi Arabia.
The girl was married to her father's cousin last year against her wishes and those of her mother. Apparently the marriage was sealed with a dowry of 20.000 €
The Human Right Commission has hired a lawyer to represent the girl when she takes her case to the court near the conservative Riyadh.
This is the first time that the Human Rights Commission has intervened publicly in such a case.
Saudi Arabia has no minimun legal age for marriage. a draft law prohibiting child marriage is under discussion. The draft law is expected to establish a minimun age for marriage of between 16 and 18.
